Teachers & Students are raving about KenKen!

I'm planning to use it in my classroom. What a great workout for the brain! -- Michele

OK, I love it. Every morning I have my KenKen with coffee. I think it's a fabulous tool for developing number sense and logical thinking. It reminds me of Master Mind (another game which I also love) in the kind of thinking that it requires, yet it's better in that it builds the thinking with numbers and not just colored marbles. The progression of difficulty is also wonderful. Oh, and did I mention that it's great fun?
-- Cynthia L., Creator of Fun Mathematics Lessons, Rice Univ

I heard about KenKen from the NY Times puzzle page, and I do them there every day. I am a teacher (professor of computer science), but don't teach at a level where I would use these instructionally -- except perhaps as an exercise in heuristic constraint-solvers or something (interesting to think about using a SAT solver to solve KenKen :-) ). I do sometimes sit down and work some online with my 4th grade daughter to increase her facility. The NYTimes ones are in a good range for that. -- Eliot M.

I am a math teacher trainer for elementary schools, and a sudoku addict. I would love to introduce teachers to KenKen puzzles so they can use them with all children in their classrooms. I will present it in February to about 35 elementary school math teachers, coordinators and specialists. I had visited your website and will share it with others.
-- Sandy O., a new KenKen fan!

I teach math at a public elementary school in Somerville, Mass. The math consultant hired by the city to work with teachers on improving student performance introduced a group of us to KenKen at a workshop last week. I have noticed that some kids who normally hate math and/or do poorly in math are having a great time with KenKen.
-- Mike W., Somerville, Mass.

I like to work the archived crosswords on the New York Times website and saw the KenKen link and the promotion by Will Shortz. I tried KenKen and liked it. Now I am telling family and friends who like sudoku to give KenKen a try. Perhaps KenKen should be distributed to elementary schools for use in the math curriculum in the U.S. Thanks for the new cognitive stimulation.
-- Dr. Russell Y., Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit

I subscribe to a website called Mr. L's Math. There was a reference and a link to KenKen in his last newsletter. I love it and plan to use it with my math students. -- Linda H.

I discovered KenKen on the NY Times. I am a Mathematics Staff Developer for the New York Public Schools and am always looking for innovative ways of having students practice basic arithmetic skills. I have urged the teachers I work with to use KenKen in classes.
-- Stuart F., Math Consultant, IS 52

I'm a college student at Towson State, and I found KenKen in my university's newspaper. Very Addictive! -- Elysse F.

Will Shortz Presents KenKen, volume 1 was in a store, and I loved doing the puzzles so much that I went back the next day and bought volume 2. I am a retired elementary teacher who was impressed to see my favorite mathematical author, Marilyn Burns' name on the cover of the Can You KenKen?, endorsing the product. -- Debbie W.

A neighbor gave it to me from the St. Petersburg, Fla., Times. I am a volunteer math teacher in the Minneapolis public schools, have a PhD in Engineering, and am a retired professor of engineering. I have volunteered for 11 years. Sudoku has logic, but no math. KenKen has math and is much more useful. I intend to use it when school resumes in January. -- Stephen M.

Great puzzles – it appears in the Richmond Times Dispatch. I look forward to more.
-- William H., Mathematics Professor, Virginia Commonwealth Univ

Greetings from the Philippines! I would like to congratulate all the men and women behind this great puzzle, KenKen. I am a high school teacher and I am looking at using KenKen as an enrichment activity to develop the analytical/logical skills of my students. In fact, I plan to form a KenKen Club in our school. -- Jonas Emil E., Philippines

I saw the puzzles in the Reader's Digest. My fifth graders loved it! I have downloaded the ones I can get for free (we teachers are always looking for the free stuff) and will begin giving it to them weekly. I really like the math practice it gives them in all the basic operations.
-- Mackie G., Albuquerque, N.M.

KenKen is at my Barnes and Noble. Being a sudoku lover and a high school math teacher, I thought I'd try a new puzzle. I loved it instantly. My students ask for more and the college student who is a practicum student in my room is also addicted. -– Martha H., Iowa

I play every morning in my newspaper, the Ottawa Citizen, while eating breakfast…. I will, without doubt, bring my new KenKen book to school, where I’m in the eighth grade. The game has got me hooked! You have already got one sale when KenKen DS comes to North America!
-- Josh S., Age 13, Orleans, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

I received a free copy of Will Shortz Present KenKen (volume I) at the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges annual conference in Nov. 2008 from one of the publisher's exhibit booth.
– Letucker

I originally discovered KenKen in The Ottawa Citizen … a 4x4 and 6x6 daily … and have been doing them all fall. As a retired teacher, I can see the value of these to challenge my math students. I like to make it part of my daily morning routine. -- Janet B.

I learned of KenKen when it was published in The Times newspaper in the United Kingdom and can't get enough of it. I'm a maths teacher and my year 8s love a KenKen puzzle at the start of the lesson!
-- Will C.

While playing sudoku on a plane, a lady next to me showed me KenKen and had an extra puzzle for me to try. Very clever. She uses it with math teachers to improve learning skills. I have also forwarded to my wife to share with math teachers in her school. -- Henry D.

I found a KenKen book at Barnes and Noble. Being a sudoku lover and a high school math teacher, I thought I'd try a new puzzle. I loved it instantly. My students, all in upper level Algebra 2 and Precalculus, ask for more, and the college student who is a practicum student in my room is also now addicted. Keep making them! -- Martha H.
P.S. A student asked today if I had more KenKen. Thanks for making math fun!
