kenken questions...

i have two questions that i cannot seem to find the answer to. any help would be much appreciated!

i downloaded kenken from capcom and the following two things are of great consternation to me.

1. in the section where they've removed the type of problem, there is sometimes a negative sign in front of the number. what does that mean?

2. there is a 4 square problem (3 across, 1 down) that has a total of 44. am i being dense, but how does this work??
